Great Songs for Hip Hop Dancers

Hip hop dance is more of a street dance which has been modified over the years. It’s more of an acrobatic performance with all the locking, jumping, somersaults and so on. Hip hop dancers are becoming famous these days as anyone can start a team. The movie Step Up is a great example of hip hop dancing. A lot of shows and competitions are conducted these days to encourage hip hop dancers.

Step up 2 final dance
There are a lot of rappers like Akon, Flo Rida, Eminem, and Snoop Dog. Their music just puts everybody on their feet, giving great dance vibes. Lyrics are not a must for hip hop songs. Beats in the music make the listener go crazy. Rappers can make any song a hit by rapping. Just a small bit in the song pulls the song to heights. The Step Up 2 movie final dance is really awesome to watch. All the dancers and their flexible steps are the main highlight of the performance. It’s got a mix of some songs and plain music. The first movie Step Up has the final dance song by Petey Pablo who is also a good rapper.

Golden Age of Boxing: The 18th Century?

It is difficult to separate Britain and boxing, as they both have a connection that started in the fifteenth century.  From the year 1698, people witnessed many boxing matches at the most popular theatre at London, called The Royal Theatre. King George was really enamored of the thought of fighting and he conducted frequent matches there.  In the year 1723, King George, for the love of the sport, set up a ring at Hyde Park.

Do you know who was known as the first ‘boxing champion?’ It was James Figg , the British boxer who was responsible for revolutionizing the game.  He entered the ring in the year 1719 and he was triumphant till the year 1730.  James Figg made the game popular, and many argue that much of what we see in boxing matches now takes James Figg as its origin.

Jack Broughton was the student of Figg and he organized the game. He laid down many rules and he is called the ‘Father of British Boxing.’ It was Broughton who introduced gloves into the game, at the time only for training.

The renowned London Boxer Daniel Mendoza is responsible for making the game more distinguished. Earlier boxing was merely brutal fights, but then the rules laid by Daniel made the game more classy. The Golden Era of British boxing was when the Queensbury Rules were laid, turning the game which was more like wrestling into a refined sport. The well known three minute round that we have now is included in the Queensbury Rules. The seventeenth century witnessed great world champions like Jem Mace, Jim Belcher, James Burke, and Tom Cribb.

The view from Lisbon, Portugal.

The view from Lisbon, Portugal.

Continuing with our global fact-based reports, the tutoring lessons in NYC are getting a boost from the Portugese as we take a peak at the Atlantic-bordering country attached to the spine of Spain. The nation – an interesting mix of Spanish and African cultures – has a culture that is purely Portuguese and different from the rest of Europe. Let’s take a look at some of Portugal’s wildest features:

1. Portugal is a heavily urban-concentrated; about a third of the population lives in either the capital city of Porto or Lisbon.

2. If we were still ruled by the Roman Empire, Portugal would be known to us as Luistania.

3. Nine countries across the world have Portuguese as their official language; they are: Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, Guinea Bassau, Mozambique, Principe, Sao Tome e Principe and Equatorial Guinea.

4. Portugal is a teeny bit bigger than the state of Maine.

5. Bertrand Bookstore was established in 1731, making it the oldest of its kind in the world, and is located in Lisbon.

6. About 70% of the world’s cork supply comes from Portugal. Must be because of all that Port.

7. Portugal, back in the days when the New World was still a thing, was the first of the colonial powers to abolish slavery in 1761.

8. It was a Portuguese princess that introduced the art of drinking tea to the British. And look what happened.

9. The Vasco De Gama Bridge in Lisbon is about 10.7 miles long, making it the longest span of any bridge in Europe.

10. Want to try your luck a bit? Head to Estoril Casino right outside of Lisbon… the largest gambling spot in all of Europe.

That does it for our Portuguese version of the ‘Foreign Language Supplement.’ We hope this inspired you to get involved with the language, as well as the rest of the tutoring lessons in NYC. Join us next time for our coverage of France. Until then, adeus (goodbye in Portuguese!).

Foreign Language Supplement: Ten Fun Facts About France

This is the City of Lights.

This is the City of Lights.

Next stop: Paris. In this installment of our ‘Foreign Language Supplement,’ we’ll be challenging your tutoring lessons in NYC with a dose of some French culture. France still remains as on the most influential countries in the world; in New York, bistros line the street and the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French people, is etched in our national conscience. Let’s take a look at what makes France so special:

1. After English, French is the most commonly taught foreign language in the world.

2. Well this isn’t that surprising: France alone produces over 400 different kinds of cheese.

3. It is against the law to name a pig Napoleon in France. Which, of course, is the best law ever made.

4. Paris is famously known as the ‘City of Lights,’ except that name is not a reference to the street lamps – it actually has to do with the luminaries and intellectuals that made the French capital their home.

5. Disneyland Paris is visited by more tourists yearly than the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre combined. 13.3 million, to be exact.

6. About a fifth of France’s population lives inside or a bit outside of Paris.

7. Dr. Guillotin invented the guillotine – the execution weapon of choice during the French Revolution.

8. To get a picture of how powerful the French language was years back, how about this one: French was the official language of Britain for 300 years straight.

9. French toast and French kissing are not of French origin.

10. France is the most visited country in the world, with a yearly average of 70 million tourists a year.

Boxing in NYC: Four More Great Gyms

The boxing lessons are useless if you can't train.

The boxing lessons are useless if you can’t train.

As we’ve said before, there’s not much point to our boxing lessons in NYC if you can’t use them somewhere. We gave you a bunch of places last time in New York that you can go hone your skills and, to follow up, we’ve collected another four great places. Here they are:

The Wat (291 Broadway, Manhattan) - In Thai, “Wat” means triangle. This little Downtown spot is home to a form of Thai boxing that runs a little contrary to your ordinary boxing skills. But there’s always room for experimentation.

Church Street Boxing (25 Park Place, Manhattan) – Church Street is a huge deal in the boxing world; Holyfield and Lewis both trained here and it has been a sporting establishment for many years now. So, if you decide to throw a few jabs here, you’ll be fighting in a hall of legends.

Fight House (18 West 18th Street, Manhattan) – This place is like a hodgepodge of boxing: MMA, Jujutsu and numerous other forms of fighting take place here. Like the Wat, come here to expand your skills.

The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers (Pier 60, Manhattan) - The Chelsea Piers is a Mecca for those looking to train in New York. The sporting quasi-arena lies on the Hudson and has many resources available for anyone looking to jump in the ring.

Hopefully, this itinerary helps you out after your boxing lessons in NYC. This City has plenty to offer and it’s time to start taking advantage of it.

Four More Great Boxing Books to Read

The 'Raging Bull' himself.

The ‘Raging Bull’ himself.

Here at HeyKiki, we pride ourselves over our love of books because we believe they are wonderful additions to everything we offer; in this case, our boxing lessons in NYC. A few weeks back, we gave you a list of recommendations that spanned the history of the spot and, this week, we’re back with another four to throw onto that list. Enjoy!

The Fight by Norman Mailer – One of the most famous modern American novelists tackles one of the most famous fights in American history – Ali v. Foreman. This one is in the history books.

Raging Bull by Jake La Motta – The book Martin Scorcese decided to turn into one of his earlier films is the story of Italian boxer, written himself. We don’t want to ruin the book/movie so check it out for yourself.

A Savage Business: The Comeback and Comedown of Michael Tyson by Richard Hoffer – This is the tale of the last great boxing legend. And what a tale it is.

In the Corner: Great Boxing Trainers Talk About Their Art by Dave Anderson – This book takes a different approach than the three just mentioned; it speaks to the trainers, not the fighters. These are the guys that pull the strings and, without them, fighters would be nothing. See what the trainer world is all about.

Get yourself to your local bookstore or library and check these out for yourself. You’ll be glad, after your boxing lessons in NYC, that you did.
