Tutoring the SAT: Top Three Worst Habits

Choosing the right path pays in the end!

Choosing the right path pays in the end!

While preparing for the SAT, the students develop some bad habits. SAT is such a test which can be passed by using some strategic rules along with general education. Some students think it to be like other exams and prepare for it by following the same old rules for exams. However, they must avoid these habits during preparation for SAT exams.

While attempting the test, students get stuck at difficult questions and waste their time. They don’t pay heed to the passing time and the number of questions left to be resolved.

Some students keep on answering even the questions for which they are not sure. They forget that there is negative marking in this test and scores are deducted for every wrong answer.

In the writing section, there is a word limit for the given essay. But due to lack of proper wording and language students exceed the given word limit and keep on writing more and more. It doesn’t lay any impact on the examiners.

These bad habits must be taken care of during the test and must be totally avoided.

Writing Tips for Tutors

Writing is an important part of education from pre-nursery up to higher levels of education. Tutoring writing skills to students is an excellent job. To make it fulfilling and satisfying, below-mentioned tips on writing can be considered by tutors.

First of all make the purpose of writing clear to the students. The students should be well-aware of the purpose of writing. The topics must be completely clear to the students, and only then they can write well.

Ask students to draft an outline for the topic. Give some hints about the given topic and ask students to come up with their own ideas. The students may prepare several drafts for a single topic so that they may incorporate the best arguments while writing the final essay.

Students often commit grammar and spelling mistakes during writing. These may be acceptable as far as discussion over the topic is concerned. But ask them to rectify all such mistakes during writing.

Also teach them to give one or two examples on any given topic. It will make their writing effective and impressive. Tell them to give detailed information about the examples they provide.

Once everything is set in the minds of students such as key points, examples, language etc., the students may be asked to write a complete essay.

The students must be told to double-check their writing. It will help them to rectify any mistakes committed by them side by side.

Is Your Child Really Doing Their Homework?

Does your kid’s refusal to do homework make you mad? Then you ought to read this blog further as you might find it handy. It’s so common for the parents to lose it when their kid refuses to touch his/her pen and books. Parents shout, yell and sometimes even resort to spanking when they can’t put up with their kid’s behavior when it comes to doing homework. Now, making kids do the homework is no longer a can of worms. Let’s check out some tips to handle this issue.

Who Invented Homework?!

Who Invented Homework?!

• Some kids don’t like parents to interfere in their homework. If that’s the case, instead of arguing with them, give them some time to manage the work alone.
• It is ideal to shower your kid with praise when he/she finishes the work on time. You can also reward him with chocolates or put some stickers on progress charts.
• Set a time for doing homework. This will give the idea for the kid to start and finish the work on time.
• When the examination time table is fixed, ensure you make your timetable so that all portions are covered. This helps your kid in organizing the work.
• Keep a separate study room which is devoid of noise. This helps a kid in concentrating on the work.
• The word ‘homework’ might sound annoying for many kids, so try using the word ‘study time’ or ‘work time.’
It is important to get feedback from the teacher regarding your child’s performance. Some schools don’t ‘egg on’ parents and teachers meeting frequently. In such cases, ensure you get the email address of the teacher so you can communicate. Instead of always cribbing about the child’s behavior, say some positive things that you have noticed in your child’s behavior. Try to appreciate the teacher as this will be a great encouragement. It is so common for the kids to make up stories about the teacher, so instead of talking about this with your spouse in front of the kids, try to confirm things by contacting the teacher via email.

Tutoring: Deciding Between the SAT and the ACT

The SAT and the ACT are very similar and very different.

Tutoring can be a great resource in terms of helping you prepare for standardized testing, but what about when you’re not sure what standardized test to take in the first place?

It seems like the ACT has made a huge comeback in recent years. There are more sections to it, meaning that if you’re not as reliable or consistent on the good ol’ reading, math, and writing sections. That said, if science isn’t your thing, that might be a problem for the ACT. But the SAT (for a lot of schools at least) also requires a number of additional subject tests that can pose a challenge as well. That’s a number of other hours of testing to prepare for – practice testing, studying, even maybe retakes – which in the case of the ACT could be consolidated into a single test.

Ultimately it comes down to what sort of test taker you see yourself as. While the SAT is more vocabulary based and detail oriented, with notoriously tricky questions designed to trip you up, the ACT is relatively straight forward and big picture focused. All the same though, finding good tutoring can help you no matter what test you wind up choosing, so go on HeyKiki and find a tutor that’s right for you today!

How Fast Can You Read?

Speed Reading

Speed Reading

Reading fast can make learning and working faster and more effective. Speed reading can allow you to understand the content properly in minimum time. Speed reading is the art of extracting only the information you need, rather than cramming all the given content.
Skillful speed readers try to read specific words in each paragraph, grasp the meaning, and then move on to the next. Rather than reading all that is written, the reader is only interested in important and useful information.
Here are some tips to improve your reading speed:

  • Try to read in appropriate environment. One should read in an atmosphere where it’s easy to focus – like a library or bookstore.
  • Read early in the day, as this improves concentration, making it more likely to increase or even double normal reading speed.
  • Try to avoid reading in bed or in a lazy atmosphere; when the brain and body relax, it’s more difficult to maintain a high speed.
  • Keep what you’re reading at a 45-degree angle. This minor adjustment reduces eyestrain and also enhances the reading speed.
  • Try focus reading. While reading any content, divide it into easy headings and sub-headings. This will help you to improve speed and also better-understand the content.
  • Try reading only the first and last lines of each paragraph, surmising the gist of the rest of the sentences within the paragraph.
  • Improve your vocabulary. This will cut down the time you look for the meaning of unknown words.
  • Read regularly. Take 15 minutes out of your daily routine to read, read, and only read.
  • Following these few steps will definitely improve your reading skills.
