Food plays an important role in staying healthy. The right diet combined with the right kind of exercise and lifestyle is necessary to lead a healthy life. Yoga diet recipes are made from easily available ingredients that complete the ‘Sattvic’ diet needs. These dishes are not only tasty but also contain much nutrition. There is a collection of Yogic vegetarian recipes used in the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers and Ashrams.
Here are some of the Recipes:
1. Power Drink: Power Drink is very nutritious and is considered as real tonic. It is equivalent to a healthy breakfast. Dried fruits provide ample energy to the body especially the almonds which are excellent for the brain. Very few ingredients are required to make a single serving of Power Drink: 5 almonds, 1 big dry fig, 1 or 2 dates, few nuts (e.g. cashew or pistachios), few filaments of Saffron and few drops of rose water
Instructions: Soak the almonds and the rest of the ingredients separately, a night before and in the morning peel off the skin of almonds. Remove the pit from the dates and pour all the ingredients in the blender and some water to adjust the consistency and churn it well. Before serving this thick power shake add a few drops of rose water.
2. Lentils in Molasses: Lentils are very nutritious and easily digestible. The following ingredients are sufficient for serving 4 to 6 people: 2 cups lentils, 4 cups water, 1 bay leaf, 3/4 cup tomato paste, 3 tbsp. molasses, 2 tsp. sugar or honey, 1/2 tsp. ginger powder, 1/2 mustard powder, 1/2 chili powder, 1 tsp. black pepper and salt to taste
Instructions: Cook lentils in water with bay leaf for 45 minutes and make sure that the lentils should not overcook or stay whole. Then add the rest of the ingredients and stir well and simmer it for another 15 minutes and then serve hot.
3. Split Pea Soup: Green vegetables are considered as very nutrient rich food and peas is one of them. Seven cups of split pea soup can be served with the suggested ingredients: 2 tbsp. of oil, 1 tsp. of basil, 1/4 tsp. of black pepper, 1 tsp. of cumin powder, 2 tsp. of salt, 1/2 tsp. of ginger powder, 6 cups of water, 3 cups of split peas, 1/2 cup of carrots, 1/2 cup of celery, 1/2 cup of green peppers, 1/2 cup of potatoes, 1 tsp. of honey, 1 tbsp. of lemon juice.
Instructions: Sauté spices in oil over low heat for a few minutes. Add in the chopped vegetables and stir well to coat them. Then add water, split peas, honey and lemon juice. Let it reach the boiling point once and then simmer it for one hour or longer for a creamy consistency.
