Joyce Hatto’s Musical Career

Joyce Hatto - Gifted pianist or scheming imposter?

Joyce Hatto – Gifted pianist or scheming imposter?

Joyce Hatto was an English pianist best known for her infamous plagiarized piano recordings. She was born on September 5, 1928 in London. Even as a child, her talent as a pianist was tangible and she began performing at several concerts throughout Europe in her twenties. She also had a thriving career as a piano teacher, working both at schools and as a private tutor.

Hatto received mixed responses from her critics. They said that she had good musical sense but were quick to point out that her performance does not really stand out. Her public performances were cut short rather suddenly as she was diagnosed with cancer in 1976. But this is still unclear as her radiologist stated that her cancer onset was in 1992 and there were no occurrences before that.

Hatto’s rise to fame came in her twilight years. Several recordings of Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky and others claiming that they were performed by Hatto surfaced in the early 2000s. They were received enthusiastically by the piano community. Appreciation for these works started pouring in and Hatto started to get noticed again.

People started doubting the authenticity of Hatto’s records only after 2006 though similarities between her work and the work of other artists were noted as early as 2005. Joyce Hatto passed away on June 29, 2006 amidst all these chaos. A year after her death, her husband and owner of the label Concert Artist Recordings under which the dubious recordings were released, William Barrington-Coupe came clean. He admitted to the fraud through a letter to Swedish record producer Robert von Bahr. A film based on the life and times of Joyce Hatto titled ‘Loving Miss Hatto’ was made by Left Bank Pictures.
