Alter your teaching style to suit your student’s need.

Alter your teaching style to suit your student’s need.

Music has no boundaries. It can cross physical barriers and reach out to people from different cultures and social settings. Because of its universal nature, music is an ideal tool to connect with students with special needs such as autism. The therapeutic effect of music has known to be used to help such students with positive results.

Teaching piano to students with autism requires certain skills which may not be required while working with other students. The first and foremost requirement for this is patience. Autistic students can feel intimidated by other people. As an instructor, you will have to earn their trust before you can start teaching them. Find out if your student has any special or favorite song and use it is a starting point to connect with him. Once your student is comfortable with you, you can proceed to the lessons. Use a mix of visual and tactile cues along with the music to make your student concentrate. Several autistic children have the knack of playing by ear. If your student has this ability, try to use it to his advantage.

Through constant practice and support from teachers, autistic students can progress to advanced levels. At this stage, you might consider showcasing your ward’s talent formally or make him play as part of an ensemble. This requires additional effort and practice as autistic students may have trouble following verbal instructions. This includes not only the music but also all other minor events such as coming to the stage, taking position, reading the correct note in sync with the other players and leaving the stage. Though this might sound difficult, it is possible if you believe in you and your student.

An unknown pianist is now seen at various places in Euromaidan in Ukraine. Although his real identity is not known to anyone however he is a young student in his 20s. He just informs that he studied at a music college in Western Ukraine. He remains covered in ski masks and fighting gear. Although his dress-up and the fighting gear makes him appear that he is getting ready for some fight however the reality is that he performs piano music in this dress-up. He has been performing for so many months the lyrical recitals on an old upright piano for the Maidanites of Kiev.

Unplanned or unrehearsed piano performances have now become common in Ukraine due to protests by the public against the government. But this young man who calls himself the piano extremist has now become a lecturer for music in the Euromaidan. He has given numerous performances in various parts of Ukraine including area in the Independence Square, on the paths which run through worn out hurdles across the city and on the top of a burned bus of the ‘Berkut’- the band of soldiers in the Ukraine.

He further states that he is playing music so as to show the world that people in Ukraine are well-educated not to cause any nuisance even during such violent situations. He is mostly found playing music of Ludovico Einaudi, the Italian composer. This piano extremist can be seen with a sheet of music in his jacket.
In other words, he is fighting against the government through the power of music.
