Goatskin or other animal skins are stretched out and tacked down on one side while the other open-ended side is used to control pitch. It is a recent instrumental innovation, with its origins dating back to the early 20th century. Many believe it was an outgrowth of the tambourine and first used in Irish folk around the 1920s. It still has a fair amount of popularity in America and Ireland when used as a supplement for the guitar, snare drums and vocals.
